Keys to the Game: Week 7

Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans (4-2, 1-0 SOC I) @ Green Bobcats (1-5, 0-1 SOC I)

When: Friday, September 29, 7:00 PM

Where: Green Bobcats Stadium, Franklin Furnace, OH

The Bobcats will looking to snap their losing skid, as well as their first SOC win of the season. Portsmouth Notre Dame will be looking to pick up a key win ahead of a possible big showdown next week against Eastern.


Portsmouth Notre Dame:

  • The Titans' need a balanced offensive effort. That all will hinge on the play of QB Ethan Kingrey and RB Jordan Davis

  • On defense, the Titans will be needing to keep the Bobcats from gaining large chunks of yards on early downs and dictate the tempo of the game.

Green:

  • The Bobcat offense will need sustain long drives and shorten the game. This means avoiding negative plays on early downs and costly turnovers.

  • The defense must not allow the big play with a Titans' offense that has proven they can score a lot. A tough, discipline effort will be needed.

Symmes Valley Vikings (3-3, 1-0 SOC I) @ Eastern Eagles (6-0, 1-0 SOC I)

When: Friday, September 29, 7:00 PM

Where: Eastern Eagles Stadium, Beaver, OH

The Vikings will be looking to keep their winning streak going and possibly shake up the SOC title race with a win over Eastern. However, the Eagles are going to be looking to their march to back-to-back league titles and high hopes come playoff time.


Symmes Valley:

  • The Vikings will need to keep the ball out of Eastern's hands. This means establishing a solid run attack and moving the chains to eat clock.

  • The defense will need to know their assignments and play disciplined in order to limit Eastern's playmakers when they're in open space.

Eastern:

  • The offense will need to find an early rhythm in their passing attack in order to keep the Vikings defense on their heels.

  • The defense must not allow the Vikings rushing attack to gain any footing. They'll need to close down the running lanes early.

Rock Hill Redmen (2-4, 0-3 OVC) @ Ironton Fighting Tigers (5-1, 3-0 OVC)

Time: Friday, September 29, 7:00 PM

Where: Tanks Memorial Stadium, Ironton, OH

Ironton continues their march to an OVC crown and postseason play. The Redmen are faced with an uphill task ending their losing skid, all the while trying to slow down the Tigers.


Rock Hill:

  • The Redmen must be successful on early downs and keep the clock moving as to shorten the game.

  • The defense will be need to find ways to limit Ironton's big play abilities and not allow their offense to have short, explosive drives.

Ironton:

  • The biggest hurdle for Ironton's offense will be to eliminate costly penalties and mental errors on Friday.

  • Ironton's defense will need to keep Rock Hill's backs from finding holes and consume clock.

Coal Grove Hornets (4-2, 1-2 OVC) @ Gallia Academy Blue Devils (5-1, 2-1 OVC)

Time: Friday, September 29, 7:00 PM

Where: Memorial Field, Gallipolis, OH

The Hornets suffered a tough loss to Gallia Academy last season and want revenge. The Blue Devils are looking to bounce back after suffering their first setback of the season last week. A lot of playoff points and positioning will be up for grabs in this one.


Coal Grove:

  • Offensively, the Hornets will need to get rid of the turnover bug and put the ball in the end zone on Friday.

  • The defense must limit the Blue Devils from establishing their run game early on and force them into being one dimensional.

Gallia Academy:

  • The Trojans must get their rushing attack going from the start. This means they will need to lean on their size in the trenches to help get their offense going.

  • The defense will need to prevent Coal Grove from consuming clock and playing their style of play. So forcing third-and-long situations will be key.

Chesapeake Panthers (3-3, 0-3 OVC) @ Portsmouth Trojans (3-3, 2-1 OVC)

Time: Friday, September 29, 7:00 PM

Where: Trojan Coliseum , Portsmouth, OH

The Trojans will be looking to climb their way up the ladder in the region as the playoffs get closer. Chesapeake is looking to end their losing skid after playing their toughest slate of games. The outcome of this one will have playoff implications for both teams.


Chesapeake:

  • The Panthers must get their ground game going early. Gaining positive yards and moving the chains will help set the tone in this one.

  • The defense will need to play a physical brand of football against Portsmouth's power rushing attack.

Portsmouth:

  • The Trojans will have an advantage along the offensive line. So expect to see the ground attack revved up and ready to go.

  • The defense will have keep Chesapeake's speed from getting outside where they can hurt the Trojans the most.

Game of the Week: Fairland Dragons (5-1, 2-1 OVC) @ South Point Pointers (4-2, 2-1 OVC)

Time: Friday, September 29, 7:00 PM

Where: Alumni Stadium, South Point, OH

Last season's the Pointers played the Dragons much tougher than expected. However this season, the Pointers expect to do more than just play tough. Fairland will be looking to keep pace with a lofty playoff seed in the region. A win for South Point would cause a major change in their postseason future.


Fairland:

  • The Dragons will need to continue their offensive rhythm. Spreading the ball out to their key playmakers will be a good recipe for success on Friday.

  • Defensively, the Dragons will need to key on the run. This means playing a tough, physical style of play in the trenches.

  • The Dragons will need to avoid turnovers and allow the Pointers to take advantage of short fields, as they've done all season.

South Point:

  • South Point's backfield will be a major advantage. So expect to see carries from their trio of Freeman, Wilburn and Chapman early and often.

  • The Pointers defense will have a slight advantage in the trenches. This advantage could help in stopping the run and applying pressure on the quarterback.

  • In a big game like this Friday, South Point will need to avoid costly penalties that could stop their drives and extend Fairland's.
