Keys to the Game: Week 8

Chesapeake Panthers (2-5, 0-4) South Point Pointers (2-5, 0-4)

Time: Friday, September 30, 7:00 PM

Where: Jim Mayo Memorial Stadium, Proctorville, OH

The Dragons come into this game looking to shake off last week's tough loss at Gallia Academy. Meanwhile, South Point is reeling from 3 straight losses and in search of a win that can punch their ticket for postseason play.

Chesapeake:

  • The offense had good success last week moving the ball and was able to keep the game within reason. So expect the same blueprint this week.

  • The defense needs to avoid letting Pointer quarterback Jordan Ermalovich getting out of the pocket to alleviate the defensive backs having to cover for too long.

South Point:

  • The Pointers have an advantage at the skill position on Friday. Spreading the ball around and letting those players make plays will be a difference maker.

  • On the defensive side, the Pointers need to minimize early down gains and force the Panthers into 3rd-and-long situations.

Symmes Valley Vikings (1-5, 0-2) @ Sciotoville East Tartans (2-5, 0-2)

Time: Friday, October 7, 7:00 PM

Where: Allard Park, Sciotoville, OH

There's quite a bit on the line for both team this Friday: The winner of this one is snaps a 5-game losing streak and the winner keeps postseason hopes alive. So expect both teams to be energized this week.

Symmes Valley:

  • The offense has struggled at times this year. So limiting penalties and positive yardage when the Vikings have the ball will be important Friday.

  • Field position could be key on Friday. So the Viking defense can help their offense by limiting the Tartans drives from crossing midfield and make force more 3-and-outs.

Sciotoville East:

  • East needs to avoid giving the Vikings a short field. So simply gaining yards and gaining first downs will be good defense for the Tartans.

  • On the defensive side, forcing the Vikings into long down-and-distance situations or passing situations will aid them in a winning formula.

Green Bobcats (6-1, 1-1) @ Northwest Mohawks (5-2, 2-0)

When: Friday, October 7, 7:00 PM

Where: Northwest Athletics Mohawk Field, McDermott, OH

This will be good test for the Bobcats as they gear up for their game against Northwest next week. However, Green needs to keep their focus and not make this a "trap game" as Notre Dame is very capable of knocking off the Bobcats.

Green:

  • Getting the ground game going early will make things easier for the Bobcat offense. So expect to see plenty of Nathaniel Brannigan carrying the rock.

  • The Mohawks will implement a tough ground attack. The success of Green's front seven will determine the tone of this game.

Northwest

  • The Mohawks are going set the tone with their rushing attack. So expect to see running backs Wyatt Brackman and Kory Butler to share the load Friday.

  • The defensive line for Northwest will be tested against a run heavy Bobcat offense. Being the more physical team will decide a lot in this game.

Rock Hill Redmen (3-4, 1-3) @ Gallia Academy Blue Devils (7-0, 4-0)

Time: Friday, October 7, 7:00 PM

Where: Memorial Field, Gallipolis, OH

Ironton has been coasting along as of late as they're piling up points in league play as they gear up for the playoffs. The Redmen have improved overall as the season has progressed but it will take a monumental effort to keep this game in check.

Rock Hill:

  • The Redmen will need to play keep away from a potent Tiger offense. So they need to be able to control the line of scrimmage and gain first downs.

  • The defense has a tall task of trying to stop a an array of offensive weapons from Ironton. Being physical up front will need to be the starting point.

Gallia Academy:

  • Runnning back Hudson Shamblin will set the tone for the Blue Devils on offense. A big game by him, means good things for the home team.

  • The play in the trenches will determine a lot this week. The Blue Devils physicality will be tested on Friday night.

Coal Grove Hornets (5-2, 2-2) @ Ironton Fighting Tigers (7-0, 4-0)

Time: Friday, October 7, 7:00 PM

Where: Tanks Memorial Stadium, Ironton, OH

Coal Grove:

  • Coal Grove's success is going to rest on the shoulders of Hall, Simpson and Murphy. So expect a steady diet of of those three all night.

  • The Tigers are explosive on offense, so the Hornet defense will need to find a way to minimize those big plays as much as possible.

Ironton:

  • Ironton will have the advantage of speed when on offense. So expect the ball to be spread around to keep the Hornet defense on their heels.

  • The Tiger defense will need to gang tackle Hall and not allow him to break into the second level of the defense.

Game of the Week: Fairland Dragons (5-2, 2-2) @ Portsmouth Trojans (4-3, 3-1)

Time: Friday, October 7, 7:00 PM

Where: Trojan Coliseum, Portsmouth, OH

The Trojans are in good spirits after their big road win against Coal Grove and looking to get back to above .500 Friday night. Chesapeake is in search of some relief as they finish the final game of this brutal 4-game stretch of their schedule.

Fairland:

  • The Dragons will need to rely on their playmakers to set the tone. So expect to see quarterback Peyton Jackson and wide receiver Steeler Leep involved early.

  • There could be plenty of scoring Friday, so the offense will need to execute, gain first downs, and pressure Portsmouth to match score will be important.

  • Portsmouth's defense will be tasked with stopping a duel threat quarterback this week. Using blitzes and confusing his offensive line might slow him down.

Portsmouth:

  • Portsmouth's offense will go as far as their quarterback play takes them. So senior Tyler Duncan's arm and legs will be a major factor on Friday.

  • The running game has came alive as of late. Using the ground attack to wear down the Dragon defense will help open things up in the late quarters.

  • On defense, the Trojans have the skill players to match Fairland's skill players. This could be key to stopping the Dragons from utilizing their short passing game.
