Keys to the Game: Week 8

South Gallia Rebels (5-2, 1-1 SOC I) @ Green Bobcats (1-6, 0-2 SOC I)

When: Friday, October 6, 7:00 PM

Where: Green Bobcats Stadium, Franklin Furnace, OH

South Gallia is still trying to hold onto their SOC title chances. The Bobcats will be looking to play spoiler and dash those hopes away on Friday. In terms of postseason play, Green needs some wins. The Rebels are looking to strengthen their position.


South Gallia:

  • The Rebels need to start fast and keep their foot on the pedal. Getting the ball to their playmakers will be important.

  • The defense will need to keep Green from finding success between the tackles with their rushing attack.

Green:

  • The Bobcats need to find consistent success in the run game to keep the Rebels offense off the field.

  • The defense must limit South Gallia's success on first down plays. This will help apply pressure on their play calling on later downs.

Sciotoville East Tartans (2-4, 0-2 SOC I) @ Symmes Valley Vikings (3-4, 1-1 SOC I)

When: Friday, October 6, 7:00 PM

Where: Symmes Valley Vikings Stadium, Willow Wood, OH

With the postseason just three weeks away, the Vikings are eyeing a return. So in terms of playoff points, this is a must-win to solidify a place in the region seedings. For the Tartans, this is a must-win if they want to play week 11.


Sciotoville East:

  • The Tartans must use their speed to their advantage. Getting the ball out into space will be a big factor.

  • East must not allow the Vikings to get their ground game going. A physical and disciplined effort will be needed by their front seven.

Symmes Valley:

  • The Vikings need to get off to a fast start and set the tone. Expect to see playmakers like Will Jones or Gradee Holland get their number called early on.

  • The defense will need to know their assignments and play disciplined in order to shut down East's speed.

Gallia Academy Blue Devils (6-1, 3-1 OVC) @ Rock Hill Redmen (2-5, 0-4 OVC)

Time: Friday, October 6, 7:00 PM

Where: Redmen Stadium, Pedro, OH

The Blue Devils will be looking to not only maintain their hopes for a share of the league title, they will also be looking to get revenge for their crushing loss to the Redmen last season. Rock Hill will need looking to get a much needed win.


Gallia Academy:

  • The Blue Devils will need to use their speed advantage on the outside and let those players make plays in space.

  • The defense will be tested by Rock Hill's rushing attack. They will need to play tough in the trenches.

Rock Hill:

  • The Redmen must be successful on early downs and keep the clock moving as to shorten the game.

  • The defense will be need to find ways to limit Ironton's big play abilities and not allow their offense to have short, explosive drives.

Ironton Fighting Tigers (6-1, 4-0 OVC) @ Coal Grove Hornets (4-3, 1-3 OVC)

Time: Friday, October 6, 7:00 PM

Where: Lemaster Stadium, Coal Grove, OH

The Hornets will be looking to return home and bounce back from a tough loss last week. Ironton is looking to continue their march towards an OVC title and gear up for postseason play.


Ironton:

  • Ironton must not allow penalties and costly errors to hold back their explosive offensive attack.

  • The Tiger defense must not allow the Hornets to find a rhythm with their ground attack. Expect to see extra defenders in the box.

Coal Grove:

  • Offensively, the Hornets will need to avoid turnovers, gain first downs and shorten the game as much as possible.

  • The defense will be tasked at slowing down Ironton's speed at the skill position. Ball pursuit and disciplined play will be important.

South Point Pointers (4-3, 2-2 OVC) @ Chesapeake Panthers (3-4, 0-4 OVC)

Time: Friday, October 6, 7:00 PM

Where: Panthers Stadium, Chesapeake, OH

South Point will be looking to bounce back from last week's setback. The Panthers are still looking to stop their losing skid. In terms of postseason aspirations, the Pointers are looking to help their position in the rankings. For Chesapeake, it's a must win.


South Point:

  • The Pointers offensive line will have the advantage on Friday. So expect to see the ball put in the hands of their backs and let the guys up front open holes.

  • The defense will have keep Chesapeake's speed from getting outside where they can do the most damage.

Chesapeake:

  • The Panthers must get their ground game going early. Gaining positive yards and moving the chains will help set the tone in this one.

  • The defense will need be just as physical, if not more this week, against an experienced South Point offensive line.

Game of the Week: Portsmouth Trojans (4-3, 3-1 OVC) @ Fairland Dragons (6-1, 3-1 OVC)

Time: Friday, October 6, 7:00 PM

Where: Jim Mayo Memorial Stadium, Proctorville, OH

The Trojans pulled off a big upset at the Coliseum last season. However this year the Dragons are looking to return the favor on their own turf. In terms of postseason, Fairland is looking to bolster their chances at a top-4 spot in the region. For Portsmouth, they need to get a win to ensure a week 11 appearance.


Portsmouth:

  • The Trojans are going look to take the air out of the ball with their rushing attack. So expect to see Chase Heiland and Co. early and often.

  • Portsmouth is going to have to prevent the deep ball by the Dragons quick-strike offense.

  • Finishing drives and limiting costly penalties will go a long way to help the Trojans bring home a win on Friday.

Fairland:

  • The Dragons will need to continue their offensive rhythm. Spreading the ball out to their key playmakers will be a good recipe for success on Friday.

  • It's no secret the Dragons have to stop the run. But this means playing physical in the trenches against Portsmouth's offensive line advantage.

  • The Dragons will need to avoid turnovers and penalties, so they don't allow Portsmouth extra possessions.
