Keys to the Game: Week 9

Portsmouth Trojans (5-3, 4-1) @ South Point Pointers (3-5, 1-4)

Time: Friday, October 14, 7:00 PM

Where: Alumni Stadium, South Point, OH

There's plenty at stake this Friday for both teams. In Portsmouth's case, win gives them a chance to play for a share of the league title next week when they host Ironton. For South Point, a win would ensure a berth into the postseason for third time in school history.

Portsmouth:

  • The Trojan offensive line needs to be more physical as they face a tough defensive front from the Pointers.

  • On defense, the Trojans need to bottle up Jordan Ermolovich and the Pointer passing attack from getting any rhythm on Friday.

South Point:

  • The Pointers have been able to air it out as of late, expect them to continue that success with

  • Defensively, the Pointers will need to keep Tyler Duncan in check. Keeping him in the pocket and pressuring him will be the best way to slow down the Trojans.

Symmes Valley Vikings (1-6, 0-3) @ Notre Dame Titans (4-4, 2-1)

Time: Friday, October 14, 7:00 PM

Where: Spartan Stadium, Portsmouth, OH

Things have been rough for the Vikings this season but they still have postseason hopes. The Titans are looking to keep a foothold on a top 8 finish in the region and a first round home game.

Symmes Valley:

  • The offense has had trouble scoring this season. So limiting penalties and positive yardage when the Vikings have the ball will be important on Friday.

  • Defensively, the Vikings need to help their offense out. So forcing the Titans to 3-and-outs or forcing turnovers will be needed this week.

Notre Dame:

  • The Titans need to establish their ground game to open up the passing lanes. So expect Gavin Hart to be featured early to open up the offense.

  • On the defensive side, keeping the Vikings ground game in check is the key to winning. Expect the Titans to try and stuff the run and force passing situations.

Sciotoville East Tartans (3-5, 1-2) @ Green Bobcats (6-2, 1-2)

When: Friday, October 14, 7:00 PM

Where: Green Bobcats Stadium, Franklin Furnace, OH

It's home sweet home for the Bobcats after a tough two-weeks on the road. A win will keep the Bobcats on pace to have an opening round playoff game. The Tartans need to win to secure a playoff berth.

Sciotoville East:

  • The Tartans will need to be as efficient on offense is possible a score when they have the ball to keep up with the Bobcats.

  • On defense, keeping the Bobcats from gaining large chunks of yards on early downs and forcing long yardage situations in later downs will be a priority.

Green:

  • The Bobcats need to establish their ground game early. Getting the running game going will set the tone in this game.

  • Limiting turnovers and keeping penalties down is important when getting into late season games, and especially more so if you're heading into postseason play.

Chesapeake Panthers (2-6, 0-5) @ Rock Hill Redmen (4-4, 2-3)

Time: Friday, October 14, 7:00 PM

Where: Redmen Stadium, Pedro, OH

Coming off an huge upset last week, the Redmen must not overlook a Chesapeake team that is going to throw everything at them this Friday. A win for Rock Hill will most likely ensure a top 8 finish in the region and a home game in the opening round.

Chesapeake:

  • The Panthers will need to look to gain first downs and keep the clock moving. Shortening the game will be to their advantage.

  • Penalties we a momentum killer last week, eliminating those could help them to extend drive and keep any momentum they build.

Rock Hill:

  • The Rock Hill offensive line will be tasked with setting the tone in this one. If they can open the holes early for their stable of backs, things could look good Friday night.

  • Defensively, keeping Panther running back Ryan Martin from getting loose will be top priority in this game.

Fairland Dragons (5-3, 2-3) @ Coal Grove Hornets (5-3, 2-3)

Time: Friday, October 14, 7:00 PM

Where: Lemaster Stadium, Coal Grove, OH

Both of these teams have struggled as of late and need to get momentum as the playoffs approach. These teams have had high-scoring contests in the past and it wouldn't be a surprise to see it again this week.

Fairland:

  • The offense needs to get the ball where they have the advantage: their skill positons. Expect Steeler Leep, Brycen Hunt, Kam Kitts and Zion Martin to be involved early.

  • The Dragons have size on the defensive line and will need to use them to help keep the Hornets from getting their ground attack going.

Coal Grove:

  • The Hornets need to do what they do best and just keep pounding the rock. Expect Hall, Simpson and Murphy's names to be called a lot.

  • Fairland might be without their starting quarterback, so the Hornets need to turn up the pressure on whoever has to fill in this Friday.

Game of the Week:Gallia Academy Blue Devils (7-1, 4-1) @ Ironton Fighting Tigers (8-0, 5-0)

Time: Friday, October 14, 7:00 PM

Where: Tanks Memorial Stadium, Ironton, OH

Even though the Gallia Academy suffered a tough loss last week, there's still plenty to play for on Friday. Ironton can ensure a first place finish for the OVC title with a win. The Blue Devils need to win if they want to still earn a share of the title.

Gallia Academy:

  • Hudson Shamblin will need to turn in his best game of the year. Luckily he's capable of do so.

  • Allowing Brody Fellure to make plays with his feet might help to keep a tough Ironton defense off balance and help keep the focus off Shamblin the whole time.

  • Limiting the big plays and making the Tigers drive for long periods will not only shorten the game, but maybe cause them to make a mistake.

Ironton:

  • Expect the ball to be distributed around to everyone to keep the Gallia Academy defense on their heels.

  • Shutting down Shamblin and the ground game to force the Blue Devils to throw will be the blueprint to a win on Friday.

  • Penalties have became an issue the past couple games. The Tigers need to clean those up in a bad way before the playoffs.
