The Kentucky High School Athletic Association's Board of Control announced on Wednesday the new football realignment plan for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
In years past, the alignment plan ran for four years, but the KHSAA has decided to realign before the 2025 season.
The KHSAA uses enrollment numbers from the Kentucky Department of Education to divide teams into its six football classes.
Locally there will be some changes in district play.
In Class A, Raceland and Fairview will be joined by Nicholas County and Paris in District 6. Long-time district rival Paintsville has been moved to play in a district with Pikeville, last season's Class A champs.
The last time Nicholas County was in a district with the Rams and Eagles was the 2011 to 2014 seasons
Russell will remain in Class 3A and be in a district with East Carter and West Carter. They pick up Bath County, Fleming County and Lewis County to round out the district.
The Red Devils will be reunited with Bath County, Lewis County and Fleming County in district play for the first time since 2014.
Ashland will be moving back up to Class 4A and be reunited with some of their former district foes. Joining the Tomcats in District 6 will be Boyd County, Greenup County, Rowan County and Johnson Central.
Some other notable changes from around the state include eight-time state champion Covington Catholic dropping from Class 5A to Class 4A. Six-time state champion Central will drop from Class 4A to Class 3A and play in the same district with 2022 Class 3A champion Christian Academy. Frederick Douglass, who just finished winning its first Class 5A state title this past season, will move to Class 6A. Bardstown, last season's Class 3A runner-up, will move to Class 4A. Franklin-Simpson, the Class 4A champion in 2017 and 2018, will drop down to Class 3A.
