BERLIN — A couple of teams with basketball tradition met and one team came away with bragging rights.
Getting to brag were the Fairland Lady Dragons who used a fast start to beat the Gilmour Academy Lady Lancers 58-45 on Monday in the Classic in the Country.
Fairland (13-1) took a big first quarter lead that proved to be the difference.
Bailey Russell hit a 3-pointer and scored 9 points and Addison Godby added 6 points including a trey as the Lady Dragons went up 19-8.
The Lady Lancers got a pair of 3-pointers from Nicci Finazzo.
The Lady Dragons extended the lead to 34-19 at the half as Kylee Bruce scored 8 of her team’s 15 points in the second quarter.
Four different players scored for Gilmour Academy.
The Lady Lancers cut the deficit to 43-32 in the third quarter as Helen Holley scored 6 points including 4-of-6 at the foul line.
Bruce scored 4 points and Kamryn Barnitz hit a 3-pointer for Fairland.
The Lady Dragons regrouped and outscored Gilmour 15-13 in the fourth quarter as Bree Allen drained a triple and scored 8 points.
Elaina Kline-Ruminski hit a trifecta and scored 7 points while Holley added 4 points for the Lady Lancers.
Fairland had 4 players in double figures led by Bruce with 16 points and 4 steals. Allen had 11 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, Russell 12 points and 8 rebounds with Godby getting 11 points and 4 assists.
Gilmour Academy (7-4) was led by Holley and Kline-Ruminski with 14 each. Finazzo added 10 points.
