PORTSMOUTH — It was Kasey at the bat. Only this time, Kasey didn’t strike out.
In the famous poem “Casey At The Bat,” the great hitter Casey came up in a key situation with a chance to win the game but struck out.
Coal Grove’s Kasey Vanderhoof came up in a clutch situation and came through with what proved to be the game-winning RBI single in the Lady Hornets’ 8-7 win in 9 innings over the Portsmouth Lady Trojans in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
The victory made a winner of pitcher Abbie Deeds who tossed a complete game. Deeds struck out 15, walked just 2 and gave up 10 hits.
Vanderhoof singled home a run in the top of the ninth inning and the Coal Grove Lady Hornets slipped past the Portsmouth Lady Trojans in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Coal Grove (4-2, 2-0) scored 3 runs in the second inning and Vanderhoof also singled in 2 runs in the third inning that gave the Lady Hornets a 5-0 lead.
Portsmouth got 5 runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game on just 4 hits.
Madison Ankrom doubled home 2 runs, Maddie Boren singled in a run and Katie Ankrom tripled home 2 more runs.
Coal Grove had 16 hits as Mia Haynes was 4-5, Izzy Kitts was 3-5 with 2 doubles and an RBI, Shay Collins and Rylee Black 2-5, Kassidy Travis 2-4 with an RBI and Vanderhoof was 2-5 with 3 RBI.
Bailey Waughtel and Olivia Dickerson each went 2-4 for the Lady Trojans (2-5, 0-3).
Coal Grove plays at South Point on Monday.
