Black's 5-RBI game helps Lady Hornets down Pointers

SOUTH POINT — Pitchers get a big part of the attention, but the spotlight in this game shined on the battery mate.


Coal Grove catcher Rylee Black went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and 5 runs batted as the Lady Hornets beat the South Point Lady Pointers 10-5 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.


The game was tied after 5 innings when the Lady Hornets scored 4 times to take control of the game.


Braelie Hitchcock began Coal Grove’s big sixth inning rally with a walk and Abbie Deeds got a one-out walk. Shay Collins reached on an error as Hitchcock scored and Izzy Kitts doubled home 2 runs.


Kitts moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Black to make it 9-5.


The Lady Hornets added an insurance run in the seventh when Hitchcock led off the inning with a home run to center field.


Coal Grove (9-7, 7-2) went up 1-0 in the top of the first when Collins walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Black.


South Point (4-15, 1-9) came right back and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning.


Kaylee Stidham led off the inning with a home run, Adyson Copley tripled and scored on an error and Maddy Evans reached on an error, moved up on a wild pitch and a jot but Gracie Carmon and scored on a passed ball.


But Coal Grove scored 3 runs of its own in the third to lead 4-3 on a home run by Black after Travis walked and Kitts was hit by a pitch.


The Lady Hornets made it 5-3 in the fourth inning when Deeds singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Collins.


South Point tied the game with 2 runs in the fifth inning.


Stidham and Copley singled, pulled off a double steal and then scored on back-to-back squeeze bunts by Alli Stidham and Evans.


Travis got the win in relief as she worked the final 4 innings giving up 3 hits 3 runs with only 2 earned, and she had 3 strikeouts and one walk.


Kitts was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Hitchcock 1-3 with a home run and RBI, Collins 1-4 with an RBI and Deeds 1-4.


The Lady Pointers had 6 hits with Copley 2-4 with a double and triple, and Carmon and Jackson 1-3.
