COAL GROVE — Maybe the plan went a little awry, but the end results were just as planned.
Despite the ups and downs during the game, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets held on to beat the Gallipolis Blue Angels 49-46 on Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We have four freshmen in our top seven rotation, so it doesn’t always go as planned,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller. “But we came away with the win tonight.”
Alivia Noel scored 6 points and Kasey Vanderhoof had 4 points as Coal Grove took a 17-14 lead in the first quarter. Kenya Peck scored 8 points for Gallipolis.
The Blue Angels sliced a point off the deficit in the second quarter as Taylor Barnes hit a 3-pointer and the Lady Hornets lead was 24-22.
Noel scored 4 of Coal Grove’s 7 points in the second quarter.
Coal Grove got the point back on its lead in the third quarter as Kinsy Keeney hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points and 5 different players scored for the Lady Hornets to make it 37-34.
Both teams scored 12 points in the fourth quarter where foul shooting played a major role.
Coal Grove was just 4-of-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter but Anson got 4 points before she fouled out.
Gallipolis was 6-of-9 from the line with Barnes scoring 5 points including 3-of-4 at the line.
“We had a small lead in the fourth quarter and tried to hold the ball with under two minutes. They fouled us and we went 2-for-8 but we held on,” said Miller.
“We had our two leading scorers foul out (Noel and Anson) but Abbie Deeds and Kasey Vanderhoof played some big minutes down the stretch.”
Noel had 13 points, Anson 9 and Kendall Taylor 8 to pace Coal Grove (3-4, 2-2).
Peck scored 13 and Barnes 11 for Gallipolis.
