RACELAND, Ky. — There’s an old saying that it’s better to give than to receive. Don’t expect the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings to buy into it.
The Lady Vikings’ pitchers gave up 5 unearned runs as they lost 6-2 to the Raceland Lady Rams on Friday in the Tri-State Showcase.
“We hit the ball but they made some nice catches in the outfield,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep. “Our pitching wasn’t bad but we gave them some baserunners with walks and we had a couple of costly errors.”
Raceland (17-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bryna Wellman had a bunt single, stole second and Kali Vance singled her home.
Symmes Valley took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Desiree Simpson walked leading off and Marley Ferguson drilled a long home run.
But the Lady Rams got 5 unearned runs in the bottom of the inning that settled the outcome.
Lilly Pullin singled, Shelby Gauze reached on a 2-out error and Peyton Mackie walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored a run, Kali Vance walked, Davanna Grubb walked, Reagan Mackie singled for 2 runs.
Mackie got in a rundown and scored the final.
Brenna Tibbs took the loss as she gave up 3 hits in 4.2 innings, 5 runs but only one earned, struck out 3 and walked 4. Savannah Mart finished and allowed 2 hits and an unearned run.
Grubb got the win as she gave up 2 hits, struck out 6 and walked 3.
Ferguson was 1-3 with the home run and 2 RBI while Addy Hawk was 1-1 for the Lady Vikings.
