Lady Vikings bats fall silent; finish season district runner-ups

RIO GRANDE — They say silence is golden. Unless it’s your bats.

The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings could only manage 3 hits in a 4-2 loss to the Lucasville Valley Lady Indians in the Division 4 district finals on Thursday.

“We didn’t hit. In all our games this season, that’s probably the worst we’ve hit all year,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.

“But the girls had a good season. They played 27 games and won 20 of them. We’ll miss our two seniors (Savannah Mart and Desiree Simpson). I know the girls are down, but they had a great season.”

Valley (13-10) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Ryleigh Weeks reached on an error and an out later Emilie Johnson tripled her home. Karsyn Davis hit into a fielder’s choice as Johnson scored.

Lucasville got a run in the second when Braxton Holbrook led off with a double, moved up on a ground out and scored when Emilie Barr reached on an error.

The lead went to 4-0 in the third when Johnson started the inning with a single, Davis walked and an out later Holbrook had an RBI single.

The Lady Vikings (20-7) scored their runs in the fourth.

Desiree Simpson and Marley Ferguson both single and Savannah Mart walked to start the inning. Simpson scored on a wild pitch and Autumn Justice got an RBI single.

Brenna Tibbs took the loss as she gave up 9 hits and only 2 earned runs. She struck out 6 and walked 3.

Simpson, Ferguson and Justice were all 1-3.
