Lady Vikings blank Oak Hill, clinch first SOC title since 2015

AID — A big win gave the Symmes Valley Vikings a big goal and maybe the start of something bigger.

The Lady Vikings used the 2-hit pitching of Savannah Mart to blank the Oak Hill Lady Oaks 10-0 in a run rule win on Monday that gave Symmes Valley its first Southern Ohio Conference title since 2015.

Symmes Valley is now 18-6 overall and finishes 9-1 in the SOC to tie Northwest for the league title. Northwest rallied in the ninth inning to beat Eastern 11-8 and earn a share.

“It’s a great feeling with this group of kids,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep. “This girls have worked hard all season and put in the time in the off-season. It’s been a while since we’ve won a league title so it’s nice to be back on track and maybe it’s the start of something big.”

Mart struck out 13 and did not walk a batter in picking up the win. She also went 1-3 at the plate with a double and 3 runs batted in. Fellow senior Desiree Simpson was 1-2 with a triple and 2 RBI.

“Sav pitched a really good game. That was a good senior night for her and for Desiree. Those are the only two seniors we have and they have been great leaders all season,” said Estep.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Lady Vikings erupted for 6 runs.

Autumn Justice walked, Ally Haydon singled her to third, Emma Ridenour had an RBI single, Brenna Tibbs doubled for 2 runs, Simpson and Marley Ferguson walked and Mart doubled to clear the bases.

The lead went to 8-0 in the fourth inning.

With 2 outs, Emma Ridenour doubled, Tibbs walked, Simpson was safe on an error for a run and Ferguson doubled home the second run.

The final 2 runs scored in the fifth.

Addi Ridenour walked, stole second and Addy Hawk doubled for an RBI. Haydon followed with an RBI single to end the game and clinch the title.

Emma Ridenour was 2-3 with a double, Tibbs 1-2 with a double, Ferguson 1-2 with a double, Hawk 1-3 with a double, Natalie Simpson 1-1 and Haydon was 2-3.

Symmes Valley visits Pickerington on Saturday to play Bishop Ready at noon and Pickerington North at 2 p.m.
