WELLSTON — There’s a reason the Waterford Lady Wildcats were the Southeast District No.1-seed and a favorite to reach the Final Four.
They’re good.
The Lady Wildcats downed the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings 57-24 in the Division 4 district finals on Wednesday to advance to the regional tournament.
Waterford (21-3) had 3 players in double figures led by Kendall Sury with 23 points. Lakyn Jones scored 14 and 6-foot-4 Avery Wagner 12.
Symmes Valley (16-7) was paced by Jordi Ellison with 10 points.
Waterford took a 19-6 first quarter lead as Sury scored 10 points and Wagner had 6.
Ellison had 4 points for the Lady Vikings.
Sury scored 11 points in the second quarter and Wagner added 4 more as the lead went to 36-10 at the half.
Ellison was 2-of-4 at the foul line and Desiree Simpson had a basket to account for the Lady Vikings’ offense.
The Lady Wildcats extended the lead to 54-19 after 3 quarters as Jones hit a trio of 3-pointers and scored all 14 of her points.
Brenna Tibbs knocked down a 3-pointer and Simpson got 4 points for the Lady Vikings in the quarter.
The backups finished up in the fourth quarter as Symmes Valley outscored Waterford 5-3.
The Lady Vikings were making their first district championship game appearance in 30 seasons.
