Local track standouts place in DII state track finals

DAYTON — Cameron Burgess first trip to the state track meet was a memorable visit.


The Chesapeake Panthers junior finished third in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday at the Division 2 state meet held at the University of Dayton’s Welcome Stadium.


Burgess ran a 14.52 time and finished behind DaiVontay Young of Dayton Dunbar at 13.99 and Beau Harkelroad of Huron at 14.50.


The South Point Lady Pointers also enjoyed a third place finish as the quartet of Camille Hall, Samiya Bradburn, Leila Hall and Emma Layne  ran a 1:42.24 in the 4x200 relay.


Akron Buchtel won with a 1:39.01 time and Gilmour Academy was second at 1:40.67.

Layne had an eventful day individually as she placed in two other events.


Layne was third in the 200 meters at 25.13 seconds  and was also fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.47.


Nyla King of Toledo Central Catholic won 100 meters at 12.01 seconds and the 200 meters at 24.41.


South Point boys got a strong performance from junior Derrick Taylor who was seventh in the discus.


Taylor threw a personal-best throw of 162 feet on Friday.


Dillon Marlock of Norwayne was first in a strong field of throwers with a toss of 191-6.


Also on Friday, Ironton’s 4x200 relay team of Tatum Moore, Kayden Edwards, Maddix Markel and Jack Whaley ran a time of 1:31.45 but failed to make the finals.


South Point’s 4x100 relay team of Landon Vance, Joey Bloebaum, Elijah Wilburn and Kamren Miller posted a time of 43.86 seconds only to fail to make the finals.


Bloebaum ran in the 400 meters as well and posted a 50.69 time but did not reach the finals.


The Lady Pointers’ Samiya Bradburn ran a 1:00.07 in the 400 meters but did not qualify for the finals.


The quartet of Bindi Staley, Camille Hall, Leila Hall and Emma Layne ran a slick time of 50.20 seconds but did not qualify for the finals in the 4x100 relay.


Chesapeake’s Corey Davis and Fairland’s Conner Black participated in the pole vault but did not make the finals.
