Local Wrestlers Move on to District Tournament

Writer: StaffStaff

ALEXANDER — A total of 10 local wrestlers continued their tournament runs last weekend at the Ohio Division 3 Southeast Sectionals at Alexander High School.

The District Tournament will be held at Coshocton High School on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Mar. 1.

The top 8 teams with the highest point totals advance to the district. Fairland finished the weekend with 83.5 points — edging out Ironton, who came in 9th with 80.5.

Fairland's team will consist of a pair of seniors in C.J. Graham and Will Callicoat, and a pair of freshmen in Zachary Burdine and Levi Mitchell.

C.J. Graham went perfect in the 126 pound weight class, winning all three by pinfall.

Graham is now 5 wins shy of 200 career match wins for his high school career, an accomplishment that has only been done by 26 wrestlers in Ohio history.

Will Callicoat finished 4-0 to win the 190-pound class. Callicoat finished off his sectional title with the takedown of Huntington's Jackson McNeal.

Burdine went 3-2 and finished 4th place in the 157. Mitchell finished 6th in the 113 class and will serve as an alternate for the Dragons.

Ironton senior Nate Sloan finished a perfect 3-0 and pinned Kameron Johnson of Waterford to take the 132 class and advanced to the next round.

Other Fighting Tiger wrestlers to advance included Braden Barbour in the 215 class, Mason Daniels in 106, and Liam Almekinder in the 113.

Chesapeake's Bryce Meyers finished second in the 106 class, but still advanced to the district. Teammate Chris Caulderon overcame a loss in the quarterfinal round to Adena's Chris Trevette and returned the favor by pinning Trevette in the third place match in the 285 class and advanced to next Friday.
