SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers got off to a slow start. Fortunately, they have a built-in way to kick into gear.
The ability to jump start the Pointers belongs to Caleb Lovely who scored 30 points including 26 over the final 3 quarters and help the South Point Pointers to a 73-55 win over the Coal Grove Hornets on Tuesday night.
“We started a little slow but then we finally got ourselves going,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise. “It wasn’t a good performance but a win is a win and we’ll take it.”
Lovely also had 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for the Pointers (1-2, 1-0). Carter Smith had 11 points with Brayden Hanshaw getting 10 points and 8 rebounds. Eli Wilburn had 8 rebounds.
Kody Harmon scored 16 points, Owen Johnson 14 and Karson Frecka 12 to pace Coal Grove (0-2, 0-1).
Coal Grove went in front 13-10 in the first quarter as Johnson scored 6 points and Frecka had 5. Each hit a 3-pointer.
Smith and Ethan Layne each hit 3-pointers for South Point in the quarter.
But the Pointers kicked their offense into gear in the second quarter as they rallied to take a 31-22 lead at the half.
Hanshaw scored 6 points, Lovely scored 5 points including a trey and Josh Childers added 4 points for the Pointers.
Harmon and Johnson combined for Coal Grove’s 9 points.
The Hornets made little run at the Pointers in the third quarter as they cut the deficit to 49-43 as Rylan Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers for Coal Grove and Harmon added 7 points.
Lovely hit a trifecta and scored 10 points to keep the Pointers in front.
South Point began to pull away in the fourth quarter as Lovely finished strong by scoring 11 points including his third 3-pointer while Hanshaw added 4 points.
Frecka had 5 points and Smith hit another 3-pointer for the Hornets.
On Friday, Coal Grove hosts Ironton and South Point visits Chesapeake.
