Loyola Marymount snaps Gonzaga's 76-game home win streak

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Loyola Marymount Lions defeated No. 6 Gonzaga 68-67 on Thursday night, snapping the Bulldogs 76-game home winning streak.

Going into the game, Gonzaga (16-4, 5-1 West Coast Conference) held the nation's eighth longest home streak in Division I history. The streak included a neutral-site win over Nov. 20 at Spokane Arena. The NCAA considered that a home game for Gonzaga.

The Lions led 66-59 with 2:55 left in regulation after Cam Shelton buried a 3-pointer.

But the Zags scored eight straight points to grab a 67-66 lead after Drew Timme's free throw with 41 seconds left.

With the shot clock running down, Shelton banked in a runner from just outside the lane to give the Lions the lead with just 13 seconds left.

Timme's attempted a game-winner, but his shot was partially blocked by Keli Leaupepe.

"The home streak is over," said Gonzaga coach. "It was going to end sometime and it ended in a tough, hard-fought battle. Our guys battled back and had a shot to keep it going. ... I don't think anybody is going to touch that [streak] for quite some time."

Several other streaks were also snapped for Gonzaga.

Previously the Bulldogs had won 83 straight games against unranked opponents and their streak of 36 straight wins in the month of January also ended.

Shelton scored 27 points to lead the Lions (14-7, 4-3), who won their first game in Spokane since 1991. Loyola had previously lost 25 straight to the Zags.

Loyola Marymount led by as many as nine in the second half and held off Gonzaga's late run.

Jalin Anderson scored 15 points and Keli Leaupepe tallied 11 for the Lions.

Timme led all Bulldog scorers with 17 points. Nolan Hickman added 12 points and six assists for the Gonzaga.

Gonzaga struggled from the field, shooting just 44.4% overall and going 4-of-14 (28.6%) from behind the arc and 15-of-23 (65.2%) from the free throw line.
