GLENDALE, Ariz. — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to upset the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 to win Super Bowl LVII.
Mahomes, who played on an injured ankle, threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and scrambled 26 yards on the go-ahead drive to set up Harrison Butker's 28-yard field goal to clinch the Lombardi Trophy.
The match up between Mahomes and Jalen Hurts was one of the more highly anticipated duels in recent history.
Both quarterbacks excelled. Hurts dominated the first half, but Mahomes turned it up in the second half with plenty of help from his supporting cast.
Hurts finished the night 27 of 38 for 304 yards and a passing score. He also rushed 15 times for 70 yards and three touchdowns.
For Kansas City (17-3), it truly was a total team effort, as they pieced together some Super Bowl magic to give the franchise their second NFL title in four years.
The defense made one of the biggest plays of the game during the first half.
On third-and-nine from the the Eagles own 46, Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton scooped up a fumble by Hurts and raced 36 yards to pull Kansas City even with 9:39 remaining before halftime.
Even though Hurts would respond with 10-straight points to give Philadelphia a 24-14 lead at halftime, the mishap would prove to be crucial down the stretch.
Kansas City would fight their way back to take the lead as Mahomes hit a wide-open Kadarius Toney for a 5-yard to give the Chiefs its first lead, 28-27, early in the fourth quarter.
Mahomes went 21 of 27 for 182 passing yards en route to being named MVP for the second time. Travis Kelce led the Chiefs receiving corps with 6 receptions for 81 yards and a score.
The Chiefs then tightened up their defense on the following possession, forcing Philly to punt.
Toney fielded the line-drive punt and returned it 65 yards to the Eagles 5 for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.
Three plays later, Mahomes connected with Skyy Moore to stretch their lead to 35-27.
But the Eagles would no go away.
Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a 45-yard gain to the Chiefs 2, then ran in for his third score of the game. He also ran in for the 2-point conversion to tie it at 35-35 with 5:15 to go.
Mahomes and the Chiefs began marching down the field on their ensuing possession.
Isiah Pacheco provided 17 yards on four carries during the drive. Then Mahomes made the big play with his feet to drive deep into Eagles territory.
In was some were calling the most controversial call of the night, cornerback James Bradberry was flagged for a defensive holding call on third-and-8. The penalty set up Kansas City with a first down instead of forcing a field goal and give the Eagles the ball back with ample time to make a comeback of their own.
Philadelphia(16-4) tried to let the Chiefs score a touchdown on the very next play so they could get the ball back. But Jerick McKinnon manage to slide at the 2, forcing the Eagles to burn their final timeout.
After Mahomes took a knee twice, Butker split the sticks with :08 remaining on the clock.
The Eagles got the ball back at their own 36, but a Hail Mary attempt from Hurts fell harmlessly to the ground as the Chiefs sideline erupted in celebration.
