NEW BOSTON — Saint Joseph's Blake Medinger got his first-ever pitching assignment and made it a memorable one.
The junior Flyer surrendered just one run and two hits to win his pitching debut and Saint Joseph batters rolled out 14 hits to beat the Glenwood Tigers 17-1 in 5 innings on Tuesday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
"For my first time pitching, I think I did a pretty good job," said Blake Medinger. "But it's easy to pitch when you have a defense that makes plays for you."
Despite it being Medinger's first time on the hill, he felt at ease knowing his teammates behind him would back him up with good defensive play.
"My defense played extremely well behind me and made me feel comfortable up on the bump."
The defense made plenty of plays in the early and often, as Beckham Waginger and Wesley Neal came up with a pair of plays in the infield to put runners out. Then Kemper Kerecman came off the bench and made two big catches at centerfield to thwart Tiger batters from reaching base.
And while it took a couple innings to get going, the offense did its part as well — especially in the third.
The Flyers (3-4) got back-to-back doubles from Carson Willis and Neal to make it 5-0. Waginger drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Then singles from Ian Whaley, Carson Lyons, and Evan Aldridge later in the inning helped balloon the lead to 11-0.
Saint Joseph piled on five more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth when Landon Rowe scored on a pass ball.
Glenwood (0-5) scored its lone run in the fourth, when Eli Conkel hit a sacrifice fly to center and score Brayden Craft.
Aldridge went 3-4 with 3 runs batted in. Neal collected 2 doubles and drove in 3 runs, Lyons went 2-2 and 2 RBIs, Medinger went 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Rowe, Kerecman, Willis, Whaley, and Carter Johnson each recorded a hit. Waginger had an RBI.
The Flyers will be back on the road on Wednesday against Portsmouth Clay.
