Morehead State wins OVC tourney, claims first automatic bid

EVANSVILLE, IND. — For just the ninth-time in program history, the Morehead State Eagles will be dancing in March.

The No. 3 seed Eagles jumped out to an early lead and held off the top-seeded Little Rock Trojans for a convincing 69-55 win to take the Ohio Valley Conference tournament and clinch the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Riley Minix led the Eagles with 26 and 12 rebounds. Drew Thelwell scored 21 and Kalil Thomas scored 13 along with 4 assists and 3 steals.

The Eagles (26-8) used a 17-0 run to jump out to a 21-7 lead just over five minutes into the contest. During the run, Morehead State forced seven turnovers and generated 10 points off them.

Little Rock (21-12) pushed back in the second half, managing to tie the game at 39-39 all.

But Morehead State regained the momentum in the game with an 8-0 run to seize a 47-39 lead with 10:36 to go in regulation.

From that point, the Eagles never let off the gas-pedal, and coasted the rest of the way.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Bradley Douglas with 14 points off the bench. They also got double-doubles from KK Robinson with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Jamir Chaplin added 11 point and 10 boards.
