LLOYD, KY — Coal Grove's Caden Turner ran for 140 yards and the defense even forced two turnovers in the first half. However, the Greenup County offense exploded late in the waning minutes of the half and allowed the Musketeers to win 37-14 over the Hornets on Friday night.
The Musketeers (1-0) were led by their all-purpose senior quarterback Tyson Sammons, who finished the night with 161 yards on the ground, 86 yards through the air, and accounted for 4 scores.
The game started off with a bang, as Kaden Murphy fielded the opening kickoff, found a seam in the Musketeer kickoff coverage, and raced 86 yards for a touchdown. But a flag negated the score and the celebration.
So instead of a quick-strike score, the Hornets (0-1) settled for their usual method of slow and methodical.
The Hornets rattled off 15 plays, melted 10:57 off the clock, and successfully converted on fourth down twice in the drive.
The final play of the long drive saw quarterback Rylan Smith extend a fourth-and-goal play by reversing field, and beating a Greenup defender to the pylon to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead.
The Hornet defense forced turnovers on Greenup's following two possessions, but couldn't capitalize on them.
The second turnover came when Braden Schug intercepted Sammons midway through the second quarter, giving the Hornets the ball at their own 37. However, Coal Grove couldn't move the ball and were forced to punt.
But misfortune reared its ugly head, as a bad snap on the punt sailed backwards and Greenup was able to set up shop at the Hornet 9 to begin their next drive.
On the very next play, Sammons scored from 8-yards out and then hit Drew Boggs for the two-point conversion pass to make it 8-6 with 5:01 remaining in the half.
Things continued to swing in favor of the Musketeers, as they held the Hornets to a three-and-out on their next possession.
Then Sammons called his own number on the first play from scrimmage and raced 81-yards for his second score of the night. Carter Nunley added the extra point and the Musketeers took a 15-6 lead.
Greenup got another big break on the final play of the half, as Sammons threw up a jump ball to teammate Drew Boggs for a 25-yard touchdown score and a 23-6 lead at the break.
Sammons and Boggs connected again on the opening drive of the third quarter, as Boggs made a catch on a post pattern for a 43-yard strike to extend the Greenup lead to 31-6.
Boggs finished the game with a game-high 68 yards receiving. Jasper Davis caught 3 balls for 34 for Greenup.
Running back Waylon Perkins added Greenup's final score of the night on a 3-yard run with 1:06 remaining in the third.
Coal Grove put together one more scoring drive. This time an 8-play drive that culminated with Caden Turner negotiating the final 11 yards himself. Smith found Landen Riley in the back of the endzone for the two-point pass play to round out the final score at 37-14 with 8:23 remaining in the game.
Up by 23, Greenup came close to scoring one more time with under three minutes remaining, as Sammons converted a 4th-and-2 pass play to Kasey Gammon for 20 yards to the Coal Grove 13.
The Hornets return home to take on the Valley Indians (0-1) at Lemaster Stadium next Friday.
