New chapter in college football takes place today

Today marks a seismic shift in college sports, as conference expansion and realignment in the college football world formally takes place today.

Many historic changes to the sport are taking place, such as the official end of the Pacific 12 Conference and the addition of teams to new conferences.

So to recap the changes from today's "move in day" for schools, here's a look at what teams are going and what the conference will look like moving forward.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE

2023 teams: Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

2024 teams: Boston College, California, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, SMUStanford, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

Facing its own internal crises, the ACC had to make some moves to stay in the arms race for realignment. The conference brought in two former PAC-12 teams and another from Dallas to extend its footprint and quell the potential mutiny from Florida State and Clemson.

BIG TEN CONFERENCE

2023 teams: Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin

2024 teams: Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, UCLAUSCWashington, Wisconsin

The Big Ten was a major player in the current realignment picture, as the conference now boasts 18 members and reaches coast-to-coast. The former Great Lakes-based conference added four big-name Pac-12 schools, including the Los Angeles media market.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE

2023 teams: Baylor, BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UCF, West Virginia

2024 teams: ArizonaArizona State, Baylor, BYU, Cincinnati, ColoradoHouston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, UCF, Utah, West Virginia

The Big 12 took a major hit with the loss of Texas and Oklahoma bolting to the SEC. But the conference managed to be aggressive and pull in four former Pac-12 schools (including Colorado, who used to be a Big 12 member), giving the conference 16 members.

PACIFIC-12 CONFERENCE

2023 teams: Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, Washington State

2024 teams: Oregon State, Washington State

Today marks the demise of one of the most historic conferences in all of college sports, the Pac-12. The conference will now be left with just two members after it was raided by the Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC. Oregon State and Washington State made arrangements to play seven and eight games against Mountain West opponents.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

2023 teams: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Miss. State, Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt

2024 teams: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Miss. State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt

The SEC pulled in two the biggest names in college football, both financially and competitively. The addition of Oklahoma and Texas to its 16-team roster proves the SEC will be just as strong as it was prior to realignment.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

2023 teams: Charlotte, East Carolina, FAU, Memphis, Navy, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, USF, UTSA

2024 teams: Army, Charlotte, East Carolina, FAU, Memphis, Navy, North Texas, Rice, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, USF, UTSA

The American continues its transformation into the old Conference USA with the addition of Army. All that's left to do is convince Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, and Southern Miss to get the gang back together.

CONFERENCE USA

2023 teams: FIU, Jacksonville State, Liberty, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, UTEP, Western Kentucky

2024 teams: FIU, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, UTEP, Western Kentucky

C-USA has probably been the biggest victim of every realignment since they began in the 2000's. None of its original teams are members, and UTEP has the longest tenure of any current school (member since 2005). Kennesaw State makes the jump from FCS to FBS this season.
