No. 3 Boilermakers stumble against Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Behind a 20-point game from Jahmir Young and a dominating stretch during the second half, the Maryland Terrapins rallied to beat the third-ranked Purdue Boilermakers 68-54 on Thursday.

The Boilermakers have loss two in a row and three of their last four — all of which have came on the road this season.

Maryland (18-8, 9-6 Big Ten) trailed 37-29 before erupting with a 29-4 run to take complete control.

Hakim Hart added 13 points as Maryland improved to 14-1 at home this season.

Zach Edey and Braden Smith both tallied 18 points for Purdue (23-4, 12-4). The Boilermakers were outrebounded 35-23 by the smaller lineup of the Terps.

Purdue seemed to have shaken off Sunday's 64-58 loss at Northwestern as they took an eight-point lead in the second half.

But following a basket by Young, Purdue forward Mason Gillis was called for a foul and then was given a technical foul for arguing with the official about the call.

The sequence ignited a 10-0 spurt by Maryland and prompted Purdue head coach Matt Painter to call a timeout and cool off the Terps.

But Maryland would continue their onslaught as Hart buried a 3 to make it 50-41 — making it a 21-4 spree at that point.

Maryland continued to surge and by the time Hart hit another trey with 7:15 remaining, the Terps were ahead 58-41 and Purdue faced its largest deficit of the season.

The Terps would balloon their lead to as much as 18 and prevent Purdue from cutting the lead to single digits the rest of the way.
