Notre Dame coach Mike Brey to step down after season

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After 23 seasons, Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey announced on Thursday that he would be stepping down at the end of the season.

Brey currently has 481 wins, making him the winningest coach in the men's basketball program's history and the seventh-most Division I by any men's head coach at their current school.

The Fighting Irish are currently 1-7 in ACC play and 9-10 overall after Tuesday's home loss to Florida State, making this their worst season under Brey since coming to South Bend.

"It has been a great run for me and our program over the past two decades, but it is time for a new voice to lead this group into the future," Brey said in an announcement. "I want to thank our student-athletes, assistant coaches and support staff who have played such a key role in the culture we have created."

Brey, 63, led the Irish to 13 NCAA tournaments, including back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in 2015 and 2016. His first three Fighting Irish teams won at least one NCAA tournament game, including a run to the Sweet 16 back in 2003.

He guided Notre Dame back to the tournament last season a four-year drought, notching wins over Rutgers in the First Four and Alabama in the first round before falling to Texas Tech. The Irish finished with a 24-11 record last season and 15-5 in the ACC -- just one game back of Duke for the ACC regular-season title.

Before coming to Notre Dame in 2000, Brey served as head coach at Delaware for five seasons, where he led the Fightin' Blue Hens to two NCAA tournament appearances and two America East regular-season titles.

The Maryland native began his college coaching career as an assistant under Mike Krzyzewski at Duke from 1987 to 1995. He also served as an assistant coach under legendary high school Morgan Wooten at DeMatha Catholic High School (Maryland), where he played his high school ball.
