COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Dallan Hayden scored three touchdowns as No. 2 Ohio State held off a late rally to beat the Maryland Terrapins 43-30 and set up the long anticipated matchup next weekend between the Buckeyes and Michigan.
TreVeyon Henderson returned to the Buckeye lineup after missing the previous two games to injury. He caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Stroud for the games first score, but managed just 19 yards on 11 carries.
Hayden would make up the difference for the Ohio State ground attack, finishing with 146 yards on 27 carries.
The Buckeyes (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten, No. 2 CFP) struggled with the Terrapins in the first half, trailing 13-10 at the break.
But Ohio State would flex its muscle in the third quarter, as Hayden would find the end zone twice, Noah Ruggles would connect on a 47-yard field goal and the defense would pitch a shutout to give the Buckeyes a 27-13 lead heading into the final quarter.
The quarter was sparked by a blocked punt by Lathan Ransom, giving Ohio State the ball at the Maryland 14 to set up Hayden's first scoring romp of the game.
However Maryland (6-5, 3-5) would not go away, as Taulia Tagovailoa would score from 5-yards out and complete a two-point conversion pass to cut the lead to just six.
Hayden would score his third rushing touchdown of the game, on a 13-yard run, but Jakorian Bennett would return a blocked extra point all the way for two points, making the score 33-23 with 12:36 remaining.
Tagovailoa would lead the Terrapins down the field and throw a one-yard touchdown pass to Jeshaun Jones on fourth down after scrambling to his right to extend the play. Chad Ryland's PAT made the score 33-30 in favor of Ohio State with 9:49 to go.
The Buckeyes would turn the ball over on downs on their following possession, giving the ball back to the Terrapins at their own 42 with 6:36 remaining in the game.
But Ohio State's defense would force a three-and-out and Hayden helped the Buckeyes run out most of the remaining time.
Noah Ruggles kicked a 45-yard field goal with 42 seconds remaining, and Steele Chambers polished off the win with a defensive touchdown with 9 seconds to play.
Ohio State will be at home next Saturday as they face bitter rival Michigan at Ohio Stadium.
