Ohio to honor Swisher on Saturday

ATHENS — The Ohio Bobcats baseball team will be celebrating former Major League Baseball catcher Steve Swisher by honoring his number, three, on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Bob Wren Stadium at 10 a.m.


The "Voice of the Bobcats" Russ Eisenstein will act as the master of ceremonies, a variety of notable Ohio baseball alumni and staff members will be speaking at the event. Things will be kicked off by current head coach Craig Moore, followed by 1970 College World Series team captain and former head coach Joe Carbone, former head coach Jerry France and Director of Athletics Julie Cromer.


Additionally, Swisher will be also honored during the Ohio football game against Northern Illinois that afternoon as well. Kickoff will be a 2 p.m. at Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium.


Swisher was a member of the 1970 College World Series team and two MAC Championship-winning teams. He earned First-Team All-MAC honors three times and was named All-District IV/All-Mideast Region in 1973. Swisher finished his collegiate career with 18 home runs, 96 RBIs, a .596 slugging percentage and 82 runs scored.


The Parkersburg, West Virginia native was selected in the first-round of the 1973 draft by the Chicago White Sox. After being traded to the Chicago Cubs, Swisher made his MLB debut during the 1974 season and would go on to be selected to the National League's All-Rookie team. In 1976, he represented the Cubs at the All-Star Game. He would go on to have stints with the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres before retiring in 1983.


The event will be open to the public.
