Panthers fall to Bobcats

COLUMBUS — Forget the 3-D glasses. The Chesapeake Panthers will be content with the 2-D kind.

With the running game missing Kaden Perkins from their duo that includes Drew Plantz, the Panthers became one dimensional in a 24-6 loss to the unbeaten Grandview Heights Bobcats on Friday.

Chesapeake (3-2) rushed for just 50 yards on 29 attempts and turned to quarterback Jacob Harris and wide receiver Evan Kerns to provide most of the offense. Harris was 11-of-17 for 159 yards and Kerns caught 6 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown.

Grandview Heights (5-0) didn’t fare much better with its offense by getting 207 total yards to 209 for the Panthers. The Bobcats ran for 144 yards and quarterbackJack Clifford was just 2-of-7 passing for 63 yards and an interception.

The team’s traded interceptions at the end of the first quarter and start of the second. Plantz picked off a Bobcats’ pass at the Panthers’ 16, but on a third down early in the second quarter the Bobcat’ Braddock Lusher intercepted a screen pass at the 42 and returned it for a touchdown.

Ryan Livingston-Sanders kicked the conversion and it was 7-0 at the 9:25 mark.

The Panthers got the ball back later in the quarter and on second down at their own 23, Harris hit Kerns on a 77-yard scoring play. The conversion failed and Chesapeake trailed 7-6 with 2:19 left in the half.

The Bobcats came out the second half and drove to the Chesapeake 14-yard line before the drive stalled and Livingston-Sanders booted a31-yard field goal to make it 10-6 with 5:14 on the clock.

Livingston-Sanders missed on a 39-yard attempt in the second quarter.

The Panthers were forced to punt on their next series and Owen Nugent returned the kick 58 yards to the Panthers’ 4-yard line. Henry Ohlinger scored on the next play and it was 17-6 with 44 seconds left in the quarter.

A short punt and a penalty on the Panthers gave the ball to the Bobcats in Chesapeake territory.

Clifford hit Will Sanzo with a 30-yard pass to the 2-yard line and Ohlinger did the honors again as he scored to make it 24-6 with 10:43 to play.

Chesapeake returns home to play Portsmouth next Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
