Panthers Outlast Upset Bid By Redmen

PEDRO — Karson Frecka only needed to make one of his two free throws. So he did.


Frecka sank a foul shot with 2.9 seconds left to give the Chesapeake Panthers a 44-43 Ohio Valley Conference win over the upset-minded Rock Hill Redmen.


The game was tied at 43-all and Rock Hill had the ball but lost it out of bounds under the basket with 11 seconds to play.


Chesapeake (11-0, 6-0) missed a shot but Frecka got the offensive board and was fouled with 2.9 seconds left.


Frecka hit the first shot and missed the second and the Redmen called time out with 1.9 left.


But Rock Hill (4-6, 1-4) was unable to get close enough for a good shot and the Panthers escaped with the win.


Kelan Davidson, Rylan Barker and Stephen Ison all hit 3-pointers as the Redmen took a 13-7 first quarter lead.


Maddox Kazee scored 5 of the Panthers’ points in the quarter.


Chesapeake rallied in the second quarter to take a 23-18 halftime lead.


Kazee hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points while Drew Platz and Philip Thacker each hit trifectas.


Barker had a 3-pointer and Davidson a basket for Rock Hill’s total.


Rock Hill cut the deficit to 32-28 in the third quarter as Yaden Bailey had a trey and 2 free throws as he scored 5 points and Ison added a 3-pointer.


Four different players scored for the Panthers.


Kaden Perkins and Kazee scored 4 points each in the fourth quarter for the Panthers.


Isaac Cox scored all 6 of his points while Barker, Ison and Bailey hit 3-pointers.


Kazee led the Panthers with a game-high 19 points. Frecka added 9 points.


Rock Hill had a balanced offense as Bailey scored 10 and Davidson, Barker and Ison all had 9 points.
