CHESAPEAKE — A grinder is a sandwich much like a Hero sandwich only harder to chew.
That would explain why South Point Pointers coach Travis Wise referred to his team’s 48-47 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday as a grinder.
“That’s one of those games where we had to grind it out. Chesapeake always tries to control the temp. They made it tough on us but a win is a win,” said Wise.
Maddox Kazee scored 6 points in the first quarter as Chesapeake took a slim 11-10 lead. Caleb Lovely scored 8 of the Pointers’ 10 points in the quarter.
The Pointers Brayden Hanshaw had 6 points and Lovely was 4-of-4 at the line as South Point rallied in the second quarter to take a 24-20 halftime lead.
Four different players scored in the second quarter for the Panthers.
Braxton Oldaker hit a 3-pointer and Jacob Skeens went 4-of-4 at the foul line as Chesapeake outscored the Pointers 13-9 in the third quarter to tie the game at 33-all.
The Pointers outscored the Panthers 15-14 in the fourth quarter as Lovely hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points and Xathan Haney also drilled a 3-pointer.
Kazee had 6 more points as five different players scored for the Panthers in the quarter.
Lovely had a game-high 20 points to go with 2 assists and 2 steals. Hanshaw had 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Kazee scored 14 points to pace the Panthers.
