SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers went into the season as the Ohio Valley Conference favorites. On Monday, they took step number one in fulfilling that prediction.
Behind the pitching of Brayden Hanshaw, the Pointers held on to beat the Ironton Fighting Tigers 3-2.
Hanshaw pitched a complete game 5-hitter to get the win. He struck out 5, walked one and gave up one earned run.
Chaydan Kerns started for Ironton and went 4 innings allowing 6 hits, 3 earned runs with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Dawson Philyaw made his varsity debut on the mound as he worked 2 scoreless innings striking out one, walking one and not allowing a hit.
“Hanshaw is a solid pitcher for them and they were aggressive at the plate,” said Ironton coach Travis Wylie.
“Chaydan didn’t have his best stuff but after the first inning he battled and settled in. Philyaw gave us a couple of good innings and that’s good to see from a left-hander. It was a well-played game between 2 conference teams.”
Kerns had a slick fielding play a la Jose Rijo as he snagged a hard hit ball behind his back that was going up the middle off the bat of Blaine Freeman following a double by Joey Lodaldo.
Kerns struck out the next batter to end the inning.
South Point (3-2, 1-0) scored all its runs in the first inning.
Ethan Layne walked leading off and scored on a triple to right field.
An out later, Freeman walked and Hanshaw grounded out as the run scored. Kolton Layman walked to load the bases and Gage Chapman was hit by a pitch with 2 outs to force in the final run.
Ironton got a run in the fifth inning when Tanner Kleinman had a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on Tyler Roach’s ground out and scored on a passed ball.
Ironton got within 3-2 with 2 outs in the sixth inning on doubles by Brady Moatz and Chaydan Kerns.
But a fly out to left field ended the rally.
The Fighting Tigers (3-2, 0-1) went out in order in the seventh.
Layman was 2-2 to lead the offense with Otzenberger 1-4 and an RBI, Lobaldo 1-4 and a double, and Hanshaw and Layne each 1-3.
Jon Wylie was 2-4, Moatz 1-3 with a double, Kerns 1-3 with a double and RBI, and Baker 1-3.
