SOUTH POINT — The dynamic rushing duo of Chase Heiland and J.T. Williams combined for 272 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground to help lead the Portsmouth Trojans to a 41-0 shutout win over the South Point Pointers in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Heiland led all rushers with 282 yards on just 14 carries and scored on two runs of 33- and 12-yards to help put the game out of reach.
Williams carried the ball 8 times for 85 yards on the ground and passed for 32 yards through the air. The senior quarterback found the end zone twice, including a 57-yard run on a midline option play to give the Trojans a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter.
Portsmouth (7-2, 5-1 OVC) got on the board right from the get-go as Lathan Bradley made a 55-yard house call on the game's opening play. Malachi Loper added the extra point to make it 7-0.
South Point tried to answer with a time-consuming drive on its first possession. Brayden Hanshaw completed four passes to as many receivers on the drive, including a key third-down conversion pass to a diving Corey Otzenberger to set the Pointers up at the Portsmouth 9.
The Trojans defense bowed up and turned away the scoring threat with a turnover on downs.
The Pointers put together another lengthy drive at the beginning of the second period, moving the chains twice via a penalty and an 8-yard completion by Hanshaw to Levi Thornsbury. But the drive stalled out and the Pointers punted.
The Trojans moved quickly down the field, in just 5 plays to reach pay dirt. The final play saw Heiland take a straight dive right up the middle on fourth-and-one. The senior tailback did go untouched, but he did have to make a move past teammate Charles Fletcher as he broke away from the pack.
Portsmouth looked as though they would threaten to extend their lead late in the half. Williams completed 3-consecutive passes to get the Trojans just into South Point territory. On third down, Williams tried to go up top, but his pass was picked off by Eli Patterson at the Pointers 14 and kept the deficit at 21-0 at the break.
Portsmouth continued to pile on in the second half with Heiland's second score of the night. Then Williams followed with his last rushing score of the game just 31 seconds later to make it 34-0 with 8:19 remaining in the third.
Fernando Poxes closed out the scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter with a burst down the far sideline for a 48-yard run.
South Point will close out the regular season on the road at Gallia Academy. Portsmouth hosts Ironton.
