Wheelersburg - The Raceland Rams were not friendly hosts. Not even in someone else's home.
The Raceland Rams used a balanced offensive attack and a smothering defensive effort to route the Ashland Tomcats 34-7 at Ed Miller Stadium on Saturday night.
Yes, you read that correctly. Ed Miller Stadium.
With the installation of a new artificial playing surface still being finished up, the Raceland Rams had to find a temporary home for their season opener. Wheelersburg ended up being the site for the early season tilt.
Raceland opened up the scoring with a 72-yard drive that was capped off with an 18-yard touchdown strike by quaterback Logan Lundy to wide receiver Parker Fannin. After a Peyton Ison extra point, the Rams lead 7-0.
Things began to unravel quickly for Ashland as they would go three-and-out on their first series and shank an 8-yard punt, giving the Rams great field position.
Running back Jules Farrow would get into the scoring column as he took a sweep off the left side and head into the endzone from 9-yards out to extend the Rams lead to 14-7.
The Rams were as balanced as you can get on offense, gaining 175 on the ground and 173 via the air.
Early in the second quarter, Raceland would again drive deep into Tomcat territory and looking to put the game away early.
However, the drive would stall out despite a diving catch on fourth down by wide receiver Landyn Newman, which came up short by just inches.
Ashland would manage to put together the best drive of the night as they would drive 75-yards in eight plays.
The drive would cultimate with running back Braxton Jennings slash his way into the endzone from 13 yards out to cut the Rams lead to 14-7 with 5:21 left in the half.
It would be the only highlight for the Tomcat offense, as they turned into spectators in the second half, only getting to run 12 plays in the final 24 minutes.
Raceland would respond with a touchdown drive of their own as Noah Wallace would score from one yard out to give the Rams a 21-7 lead going into the half.
The drive was highlighted by a 41-yard reception by senior wide receiver Connor Hughes, who would make the catch, a cutback and race down to the 1-yard line to set up the score.
The second half saw the Rams melt the clock with long drives which ended in Issac Browning touchdown runs of 17 and 7 yards.
Browning would finished the evening with 12 rushes for 61 yards to go along with his two scores.
The Rams defense turned in a solid performance only surrendering 70 total yards of offense, most of which came on the lone scoring drive by the Tomcats.
The Rams will be at home next Saturday night as they host the Russell Red Devils. Ashland will be at home Friday night as they host the Boy County Lions.
