Rams topple Sayre, advance to state semifinals

LEXINGTON — Logan Lundy accounted for five scores, and Noah Wallace and Jaxson Heighton eclipsed the century mark in rushing and the Raceland Rams took down the Sayre Spartans 42-27 to win the region title on Friday night.

Lundy ran for 81 yards on 19 carries and while he only threw for nine yards, six of those came on a touchdown pass to Brayden Webb on second-and-goal from the Sayre 6 to push Raceland's lead out to 35-14 with 5:29 left in the third quarter.

Lundy's only other completion on the night was a three-yard pass to sophomore Bryson Rowsey. But it didn't matter, because Raceland's ground game had little trouble finding success all night.

The trio of Lundy, Wallace, and Heighton accounted for nearly all of Raceland's 381 total offensive yards. Wallace carried the ball 22 times for a game-high 192 yards and Heighton had 11 carries for 100 yards and a 72-yard dash on the opening drive of the second half to stretch the Rams (10-3) lead to 29-14.

Sayre (12-1) got on the board first as quarterback Luke Pennington dropped a pass into the corner of the end zone to Brock Hoffman for a 25 yard touchdown score to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead.

The Rams came back with a 15-play drive — all of which were run plays — to tie the game up. Lundy capped off the drive with an eight yard run. Talon Stanley added the extra point to make it 7-all.

The Spartans would answer on the first play of the second half as Pennington would find Charlie Slabaugh for a one-yard score to put Sayre back out in front 14-7.

Pennington finished the night 16 of 29 for 216 yards and three touchdown passes. Coffman caught six balls for 142 yards and also had a 73-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.

Raceland would churn out another long, time-consuming drive with a 14-play drive that ended again with Lundy finding the end zone for the second time to tie it back up.

The defense would force the Spartans to punt, but Sayre's punter would have trouble with the snap and Raceland would tackle the punter, giving the Rams the ball back at the Sayre 43.

Raceland would take advantage of the short field as Lundy found the end zone for a third time to give the Rams a 22-14 lead at the half and they never looked back.

Raceland now advances to the Class A state semifinals. Their opponent will be decided once the RPI ratings are finalized after tonight's other games. But early indications are the Rams will travel to Louisville to face the Kentucky Country Day Bearcats (13-2).
