Redmen rebound with win over Pointers

PEDRO — One week after suffering their first loss of the season, the Rock Hill Redmen bounced back behind a strong second half performance to beat the South Point Points 41-20 in Ohio Valley Conference action on Friday night.

The Redmen got another solid performance from senior Anthony Stamper, who finished the game with 18 carries for a season-high 185 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. Teammate Brody Simpkins rushed 14 times for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Dallin Cox added both a rushing touchdown and a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Braylon McClellan that helped put the game out of reach.

The Redmen recovered a pooch kick to begin the game, setting the offense up at the Pointers 30. Four plays later, Stamper ran through a tackler into the endzone for the games' first score. Rylan Barker added the extra point to make it 7-0.

South Point would answer on their first possession, driving 62 yards in 13 plays to tie the game. The final play of the drive saw quarterback Brayden Hanshaw evade pressure and drop an 8-yard touchdown pass to Brayden Browning. Isaiah Schenider came on and added the point after to even the score with 4:46 left in the opening quarter.

Hanshaw finished the night 25 of 40 for 252 yards passing to lead the South Point offense. The senior connected two more times for passing scores in the game. One came in the third quarter on a 5-yard pass to Steeler Waulk and the final came in the fourth as he connected with Kamren Miller on a 29-yard strike for the Pointers final score of the night.

Rock Hill (4-1, 1-1 OVC) extended their lead early in the second quarter, as Simpkins crossed the goal line from 1-yard out to make it 14-7.

The Pointers (1-4, 0-1) would threaten to tie the game in the closing seconds of the half, driving to the Rock Hill 6. But the Redmen defense would close out the half by forcing 3-straight incompletions to take a touchdown lead into the break.

Stamper would break loose in the third quarter, making a 68-yard house call on the first play of the second half, and another run of 34 yards to help build a 27-14 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Redmen would stretch the lead out even further at the start of the fourth, as Cox tossed up a pass for Braylon McClellan who ignored double coverage to haul in a catch for a 25-yard score. Barker's kick made the score 34-14 with 10:07 remaining.

Cox later added a 9-yard score on a keeper to round out the final score.

Miller led all receivers with 10 receptions for 177 yards to go along with his touchdown snag. Caesyn Pope caught 3 balls for 43 yards.

Rock Hill will be on the road next Friday at Belpre in non-league play. The Pointers will travel up river to face the Fairland Dragons.
