Redmen use big plays to welcome Coach Love, Beat Minford

PEDRO — The Rock Hill offense capitalized on turnovers, the defense made key first half stops, and the Redmen gave new head coach Tony Love his first win with a 28-12 decision over the Minford Falcons on Friday night at Redmen Stadium.

Love who last coached in 2021 as the head man of the Ashland Tomcats wasted no time picking up his first win.

And that was thanks to some big plays on both side of the ball.

The Redmen got a huge break midway through the first quarter, as they forced a fumble and recovered the ball at the Minford 14.

Senior running back Anthony Stamper capped off the short drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, shaking off a would-be tackler and squeezing between two more get into the endzone. Rylan Barker added the point after and the Redmen lead 7-0.

The Falcons turned it over again on their ensuing possession, as a high snap flew backwards and the Redmen fell on the ball at the Falcon 29.

Stamper added his second touchdown just three plays later, knifing through the defense to make it 14-0 with 50 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Stamper finished the night with 47 yards on just 6 carries to go along with his touchdowns. On the defensive side, he an interception late in the fourth quarter.

Minford was able to play keep-away in the second quarter, limiting Rock Hill to just 3 offensive plays in the quarter — with two of those plays being kneel downs to end the half.

But the problem was the Falcons never took advantage and the Redmen did.

The Falcons opened up the second frame deep in Redmen territory , facing a crucial 3rd-and-7 play at the Rock Hill 14.

But Falcon quarterback Curtis Glenn fell under heavy pressure and threw an errant pass into the arms of Mason Hanners who returned it 29-yards to the Rock Hill 31.

On the very next play, quarterback Dallin Cox hit Braylon McClellan on a short curl, turned up field, and left the rest of the Falcon defense behind him with a 69-yard touchdown pitch-and-catch to give the Redmen a 21-0 lead with 10:11 remaining before halftime.

McClellan finished the night catching 3 balls for a game-high 99 yards and ran the ball once for 10 yards.

The Falcons again drove deep into Rock Hill territory, getting inside the 10. But the Redmen defense held on 4-straight plays, forcing a turnover on downs with 57 seconds remaining before half.

It wouldn't be until the fourth quarter for Minford (0-1) to finally get the endzone. The Falcons used a 15-play, 82-yard drive and converted 2 fourth downs on the drive.

The second conversion was 5-yard touchdown toss on fourth-and-goal by Glenn to Colt Donahoe. Glenn was stopped on the 2-point try, leaving the score at 21-6 with 8:52 remaining.

The Redmen struck quickly on their ensuing possession as Simpkins ripped off a 20-yard run to get them deep into Minford territory. Then later, Cox found McClellan again for a 19-yard scoring toss to make it 28-6 with 7:30 left.

Bryce McLaughlin led the Falcon rushing attack with 20 carries for 72 yards.
