Reds sign Wil Meyers to 1-year deal

The Cincinnati Reds announced on Thursday they have agreed to sign Wil Myers to a one-year contract with a mutual option for the 2024 season.

According to sources, the deal is for $7.5 million but could reach as high as $9.5 million based on playing time or if he's traded.

Myers would predominately used in right field but has also played first base, third base and other outfield spots. This means he could see some time at first while Joey Votto rehabs from rotator cuff surgery.

Last season, he appeared in 77 games, hitting .261 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs.

The 32-year old became a free agent after the San Diego Padres declined the $20 million option on his contract for the upcoming 2023 season. Myers was given a $1 buyout by the Padres to complete his $83 million, six-year contract.

He was AL Rookie of the Year in 2013 and selected to the All-Star game in 2016.

Myers has a career .254 batting average with 153 home runs and 521 RBIs in 10 seasons, eight with San Diego and two with Tampa Bay.

Cincinnati went 62-100 last season, marking the first season the Reds finished with at least 100 losses since going 61-101 in 1982.
