ASHLAND, Ky. — Just call Tommy Sheridan a one-hit wonder.
No, he didn’t just have one hit song and was never heard from again. Instead, the Ironton senior pitcher threw a one-hit shutout on Saturday as the Fighting Tigers beat the Ashland Tomcats 9-0.
Sheridan struck out 7, walked one and hit a batter as he picked up the complete game win.
Pierce Wamsley had the lone hit for Ashland (6-22) with a leadoff single in the fifth inning.
Ironton (14-9) scored what looked to be the only run of the game in the top of the first inning.
Ian Ginger led off with a line drive single to center field, Tyler Roach hit into a fielder’s choice but stole second and scored on a single by Jon Wylie.
Ironton finally opened up some breathing room with 8 runs in the seventh inning.
Braydon Baker reached on an error to start the inning and Dawson Philyaw put down a sacrifice bunt. Tanner Kleinman singled to put runners on the corners, Ginger walked and Baker scored on a passed ball.
Roach singled home 2 runs and Wylie followed with an RBI triple. Brady Moatz doubled home Wylie and Chaydan Kerns singled in a run.
Kerns went to second on the throw home and scored when Baker singled. Baker stole second and came home on a hit by Philyaw.
Sheridan retired the Tomcats in order in the bottom of the inning including a strikeout for the final out that served as an exclamation point for his performance.
Ironton finished with 11 hits as Wylie went 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBI and Conner Kleinman 2-4 with a double.
Moatz was 1-3 with a double and RBI, Philyaw 1-2 with an RBI, Ginger and Tanner Kleinman 1-3, Roach 1-4 with 2 RBI, Kerns 1-4 with an RBI and Baker 1-4 with an RBI for the Fighting Tigers.
Ironton will host Adena at 5 p.m. on Thursday in the Division 3 sectional tournament.
