South Point teams make strong showings at regional meet

NEW CONCORD — The South Point Pointers and Lady Pointers have been strong in track all season. They were still flexing their muscles at the Division 2 regional track meet.


On the campus of Muskingum College, the Pointers led local track standouts with qualifiers to the state track meet to be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Dayton University’s Welcome Stadium.


The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state meet and the pole vault event was dominated by local vaulters as three of the four top places were from Lawrence County.


South Point’s Carter Smith had the winning vault of 15-feet. Chesapeake Panthers Corey Davis was second at 13-feet and Fairland Dragons Conner Black went 12-8 to place fourth.


Chesapeake Panthers’ Cameron Burgess was second in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.04 seconds to earn a trip to the state meet.


Burgess placed seventh in the 300 hurdles at 41.83 seconds.


South Point’s 4x100 meter relay team of Joey Bloebaum, Elijah Wilburn, Carter Smith and Kamren Miller placed second with a time of 42.85 seconds, just behind Gallipolis which ran a 42.59.


The Pointers’ Derrick Taylor was third in the discus with a toss of 163-feet, 3-inches. Johnny Sabinski of Union Local won with a distance of 179-4.


The Ironton Fighting Tigers 4x200 relay quartet of Tatum Moore, Kayden Edwards, Maddix Markel and Jack Whaley reached the state meet by placing fourth with a 1:30.73 clocking.


South Point’s 4x200 relay team composed of Landon Vance, Elijah Wilburn, Carter Smith and Kamren Miller was seventh at 1:35.69.


The Pointers’ Joey Bloebaum was fourth in the 400-meter dash with a timer of 50.78 seconds. He was also eighth in the 200 meters at 23.38 seconds.


Ironton’s Tatum Moore ran a 51.28 time and was sixth in the 400 meters. Ironton teammate Connor Lowe was eighth in the long jump with a leap of 19-8.25.


In the girls meet, the Lady Pointers Emma Layne claimed first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.10 seconds.


Layne also qualified in the 100-meter dash as she finished fourth at 12.5 seconds and teammate Leila Hall sixth at 12.88 seconds.


Hall did qualify for the state meet as she finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.72 seconds.


South Point’s Samiya Bradburn also posted a winning time as she ran a 57.66 in the 400 meters to punch her ticket to the state meet.


The Lady Pointers took first place in two of the relay races.


The 4x100 relay team of Leila Hall, Camille Hall, Bindi Staley and Emma Layne ran a 50.12 time to win while the group of Camille Hall, Samiya Bradburn, Leila Hall and Emma Layne ran a 1:42.40 to take first place in the 4x200 relay.


Fairland Lady Dragons Molly Dunlap was fifth in the long jump at 16-9.5.
