Tarasov gets 1st NHL win as Columbus routes Rangers, 5-1

NEW YORK — Defensemen Zach Werenski and Andrew Peeke each scored goals, and Daniil Tarasov stopped 30 shots to earn his first NHL win as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the New York Rangers 5-1 on Sunday.

Yegor Chinakhov, Eric Robinson and Kent Johnson also scored for the Blue Jackets who won for the first time in three road games this season. Liam Foudy and Jack Roslovic each had two assists.

New York has now lost its second straight at home, with the other loss coming in overtime to San Jose on Thursday night.

Werenski opened the scoring for the Blue Jackets with 2:06 left in the first period. Rangers goalie Jaroslav Halak seemed to have stopped Werenski’s shot but the puck skittered past the veteran goalie into the net.

Peeke made it 2-0 at 1:42 of the second when he buried a shot from the right faceoff circle past Halak.

Chinakhov’s goal came at the 9-minute mark of the second period, to give him his first of the season and give Columbus a three-goal advantage. Foudy, making his season debut, got his second assist of the night.

Artemi Panarin got his fourth goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power play with 1:16 left in the middle period to get the Rangers on the scoreboard. Panarin has now scored a point in each of the Rangers' six games this season

Robinson added his first goal with 5:47 left in the third. Then Johnson followed up with his score 44 seconds later.

Tarasov, who has been backing up starter Elvis Merzlikins while Joonas Korpisalo recovers from hip surgery, made 30 saves on the night.

The 23-year-old Russian, made a nifty glove save in the second period, on shot attempt by Rangers defenseman Zac Jones at 6:40 of the second and was mobbed by his teammates at the final horn.

Halak had 16 saves to fall to 0-2-0. The 37-year-old netminder from Slovakia, joined the Rangers last summer to back up starter Igor Shesterkin.

Blue Jackets return home to host the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.
