Texas Tech comeback stuns No. 13 Iowa State

LUBBOCK, Texas — De'Vion Harmon scored 16 points — all of them in the second half —

to help the Texas Tech Red Raiders erase a 23-point deficit and upset the 13th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones 80-77 in overtime on Monday night.


The Red Raiders tied the largest comeback by any team in Division I men's basketball this season and set a record for the largest second-half deficit comeback to win a game in the history of the Big 12/Big 8.


The win also snapped an eight-game losing skid in the conference for Texas Tech.


Iowa State appeared to be in control after Caleb Grill made one of his career-best eight 3-pointers to give the Cyclones a 59-36 lead with 12:38 remaining in regulation.


However, Texas Tech go on a 20-3 run to close the gap down the stretch.


Iowa State's would score only field goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation, which would be a 3-pointer by Grill to give him his career high of eight. The Cyclones went 3-of-16 from the field in the final 10 minutes of regulation and OT.


Iowa State (15-6, 6-3) still led by five with 40 seconds remaining in regulation after Obanor hit a 3-pointer and the Red Raiders a turnover on the ensuing inbound play.


The Cyclones committed 13 turnovers in the second half.


Harmon would get fouled on a drive and sink both free throws to tie of the game for the first time at 71-all with 21 seconds remaining. To this point, the Red Raiders had trailed the entire game.


Iowa State's Gabe Kalscheur scored 19 points but went 0-of-6 from behind the arc, with one of his misses coming up short at the buzzer in regulation.


D'Maurian Williams would give the the Red Raiders their first lead of the game on a layup, and their biggest lead was the final margin.


Harmon put Texas Tech ahead for good with one of two free throws with 42 seconds remaining in overtime, and Obanor hit two more.


Iowa State would get three tries to send the game into a second overtime, as Grill missed and Jaren Holmes got the rebound, but his shot was also short from beyond the arc. Holmes would get the ball one more time but his shot came up short again as the buzzer sounded.


Prior to Monday's win, Texas Tech's biggest comeback was from 17 down in a 99-94 overtime victory at Nevada on Dec. 27, 1997.
