Tornadoes Use 2nd Quarter Surge To Blow Past Bobcats

FRANKLIN FURNACE — What started as a normal evening was suddenly interrupted by a cloud burst.

At the end of the first quarter, the Southern Tornadoes led the Green Bobcats just 6-0.

But in the second quarter the Tornadoes erupted for 27 points and blanked the Bobcats 33-0 in a non-league game on Friday.

Southern (2-2) did most of its damage through the air as quarterback Nathan Shuster was 11-of-17 passing for 232 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Most of the completions were fast screens or short dump offs including all 3 touchdown passes.

Brandon Laudermilt had 3 receptions for 109 yards and 2 scores and Zach Thomas 3 catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Green (1-3) finished with 82 total yards of offense including 57 rushing after bad snaps led to a minus 35 yards. Blake Smith ran 13 times for 76 yards while Landon Kimbler was 4-of-9 passing for 25 yards.

The Tornadoes opened the game with a 54-yard, 7-play drive keyed by a 34-yard catch-and-run from Shuster to Thomas. A dump off pass to Carson Reuter covered 13 yards to the 4 where Gryphon Thomas ran for 3 and then 1-yard to cap the drive and make it 6-0 at the 9:52 mark.

A bad snap on a fourth down play at the Southern 34 resulted in the Tornadoes getting the ball at the 47.

Jake Wickline had a 16-yard run to the Green37 and a quick 4-yard pass to Landon Evanson got the ball to the 33 as the quarter ended.

The drive ended on a 9-yard pass to Laudermilt with 10:35 on the clock. Copper Diddle kicked the conversion for a 13-0 lead.

After a Green punt, Southern used a 40-yard pass play to Laudermilt to reach the Bobcats 43. The drive ended on a 13-yard pass to Thomas with 4:42 left in the half. Diddle’s kick made it 20-0.

Green was forced to punt again and on first down Laudermilt took a fast screen and went down the sidelines for a 60-yard pass play and a 26-0 lead with 1:52 left.

The Bobcats were faced with a fourth down at their own 36 with time running out and Thomas returned the punt 69 yards as time expired. Diddle added the conversion and it was 33-0 at the half.

A running clock was used in the second half and Green had the only scoring threats as 2 drives stalled at the Tornadoes 26- and 27-yard lines

The Bobcats visit Fairview, Ky., this week at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles (2-1) outscored Morgan County 60-50 last week.
