Updated: Oct 1

CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Panthers need to fix that self-destruct button.

A bad snap on a punt led to a safety and the ensuing kickoff was returned for a touchdown, a fumble set up another score and 2 short punts gave the Portsmouth Trojans excellent field positions for a couple of scores in their 45-8 Ohio Valley Conference win on Saturday.

The Trojans (5-1, 3-0) finished with 301 total yards including 263 on the ground. Chase Heiland ran just 8 times for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns, J.T. Williams had 38 yards on 5 carries and a score, And Lucas Bradley and Dontavion Parker each had one run that went for a touchdown. Parker ran 48 yards and Bradley 35.

Portsmouth to the ball at the 42 and Heiland ripped off a 13-yard run., J.T. Williams hit Heiland for 11 yards and then Heiland ran 17 more yards to help set up a 14-yard scoring run by Williams with 1:38 left in the quarter.

Williams passed to Heiland for the conversion and a 14-0 lead.

Someone pushed the sell-destruct button again and the ball was centered over the punter’s head and out of the end zone and it was 16-0.

On the ensuing free kick, Jacob Tidd got the ball at his own 20 and returned it the distance and the lead was 23-0 after Malachi Loper’s conversion kick.

Portsmouth put together a 88-yard, 7-play drive as Williams had runs of 9, 14 and 16 and Heiland had gains of 22, 14 and the final 10 yards for the touchdown with only 46 seconds left in the half.

Loper’s kick made it 30-8 at the half.
