Pointers can't overcome mistakes in loss to Lions

CANNONSBURG, Ky. — Young teams are known to make mistakes.

The South Point Pointers are a young team.

Various mistakes and 3 turnovers proved too much to overcome as the Pointers lost to the Boyd County Lions 38-0 in their season opener on Friday.

“We started off pretty well. We got down into the red zone and then we had some turnovers and everything just kind of spiraled out of control from there,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Davis.

“We are very young all around, especially on the line. I think eventually we will get there. They are going to have to grow up quickly, but I think we can get there.”

The Pointers running game was stymied which forced Ethan Hunt to take to the air. Hunt was 11-of-23 for 167 yards with 3 interceptions.

Landon Vance caught 5 passes for 55 yards, Brayden Hanshaw had 3 catches for 34 yards and Davon Lewis had 32 yards on 3 receptions.

Boyd County scored on the fourth play of the game as Rhett Holbrook hit Thomas Crawford on a 33-yard scoring pass. Henry Layton kicked the conversion.

The Pointers had a drive going on their next possession but a sack on 4th-and-11 ended that threat.

The Lions then went 85 yards in 17 plays with Crawford catching a 19-yard TD pass from Holbrook and it was 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Brody Castle picked off a South Point pass at the Pointers’ 37 and 3 plays later Holbrook hit Cole Hicks on a 36-yard pass for a 21-0 lead.

Boyd County missed a field goal attempt at the end of the first half. Although it appeared no one touched Layton, the Pointers were called for roughing the kicker and Layton took advantage of the second chance and hit a 25-yarder for a 24-0 halftime lead.

South Point drove into the red zone to begin the second half only to have another fourth down sack.

The Lions used just 6 plays to go 80 yards with Hunter Hedrick scoring on a 6-yard run and it was 31-0.

Castle got the final score on a 2-yard run with 5:45 to play.

The Pointers will host Spring Valley, W.Va., next Friday.
