UGA staff member arrested for reckless driving

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia football coaching staff member Jarvis Jones was arrested on Friday night on charges of reckless driving and speeding before the two-time defending champion Bulldogs' took the field for their season opener.

Jones currently serves as the Bulldogs' player connection coordinator under coach Kirby Smart. A former All-American linebacker at Georgia, Jones also played four seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Athens-Clarke County Police arrested Jones, Friday night, on misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and speeding-maximum limits. He was released on $2,400 bond.

"There will be internal discipline," said Smart when asked about the arrest on Monday. "It's a personnel matter and I can't comment further on it."

Georgia began their title defense on Saturday night with a 48-7 win over UT Martin.

This isn't the first time the program has been in the news, as at least a dozen Georgia players have been charged with moving violations since the team won the national championship in January.

On the very night of Georgia's championship celebration, on Jan. 15, offensive lineman Devin Willock and staff member Chandler LeCroy were killed in a car wreck in which police alleged that former defensive lineman Jalen Carter was racing them.

LeCroy's SUV was traveling in excess of 100 mph when his car left the road and slammed into power lines and trees.

Then in July, defensive lineman Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins and outside linebacker Samuel M'Pemba were both cited for speeding.

Smart told the press at SEC media day that Georgia brought in police to speak to the team and started a system of "checks and balances" for self-reporting speeding tickets.

Georgia will host Ball State on Saturday at noon ET.
