USFL axes four franchises ahead of XFL merger

Writer's picture: StaffStaff

The combined USFL-XFL has informed the USFL Players Association on Tuesday that the New Jersey Generals, New Orleans Breakers, Philadelphia Stars, and Pittsburgh Maulers will not be participating in next years' spring league.

The four teams to remain will be the back-to-back USFL champion Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, Memphis Showboats and Michigan Panthers.

The combined leagues announced the merger in September, with the first week set to kickoff on March 30, 2024.

But other than the kickoff date, no news had emerged from the leagues about the unified venture until Tuesday.

The XFL is expected to trim down their list of franchises in the near future.

The XFL current list of teams included the Arlington Renegades, DC Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, San Antonio Brahmas, Seattle Sea Dragons, St. Louis Battlehawks and Vegas Vipers.

With the announcement of the Gamblers remaining, it appears the XFL's Roughnecks will be dissolved.
