The United States Football League and the Xtreme Football League announced on Thursday morning the two spring leagues intend to merge both leagues ahead of the upcoming 2024 season. The announcement was made via their respective social medias.
Both leagues issued the same statement online saying:
"Today, the USFL and the XFL announced their intention to merge.
Subject to customary regulatory approvals and if the transaction is consummated, the new league will establish best-in-class operations on the most recent seasons of both leagues. This historic combination will anchor professional spring football with substantial capabilities and resources to ensure future growth and continue to enhance the development of the collective players, coaches, and staff that are coming together.
More detail regarding the new league will be announced at a later date."
There's been speculation that if the merger comes to fruition, the new league will move forward with at least 10 teams for the 2024 season. This means several franchises from each league will dissolve or move depending on venues that have been secured.
As it currently stands, the USFL has eight franchises, Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, Michigan Panthers, Memphis Showboats, New Jersey Generals, New Orleans Breakers, Philadelphia Stars, and Pittsburgh Maulers.
These team are currently playing in four hub cities of Birmingham, Alabama, Canton, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan, and Memphis, Tennessee.
The XFL has eight teams, Arlington Renegades, Washington DC Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, San Antonio Brahmas, Seattle Sea Dragons, St. Louis Battlehawks, and Vegas Vipers.
All those teams are playing in their respective cities, but are practicing and living in Arlington, Texas.
