Vegas snaps Oilers 16-game winning streak

LAS VEGAS — Edmonton's bid to tie the longest winning streak in the NHL came up one game short as Chandler Stephenson scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Oilers 3-1 on Tuesday night.

The Oilers were looking to tie the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins 17-game win streak.

Instead, Knights goalie Adin Hill turned away 30 shots in the game and helped the keep the score 1-1 after two periods.

Then Stephenson broke the tie just 1:24 into the final period, taking a pass from Jonathan Marchessault and ripped a shot from the center of the left circle to beat Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner blocker side and give the Knights a 2-1 lead.

From there, Hill continued his spectacular performance, keeping the Oilers that included thwarting a backdoor one-timer attempt from Leon Draisaitl in the late stages of regulation.

Hill currently the NHL in goals-against average (1.94) and save percentage (.936).

Nic Roy and William Karlsson also scored for the Golden Knights.

Skinner made 23 saves in the losing effort. Draisaitl and Vincent Desharnais tallied assists for the Knights.

Edmonton currently holds the NHL's best record at 26-7-0 record since Kris Knoblauch's first game as bench boss on Nov. 13.

It's remarkable where the Oilers are compared to where they started, opening the season 3-9-1 and having a 13-15-1 record before firing coach Jay Woodcroft on Nov. 12.

Edmonton hadn't lost a game since Dec. 19.
