BEAVER — The Symmes Valley Vikings dug a hole for themselves in the first half and they dug it a little too deep.
The Vikings fell behind by 15 points at halftime and battled hard to get back in the game in the second half only to fall 77-63 to the Beaver Eastern Eagles in a Southern Ohio Conference 2 game on Tuesday.
Eastern went up 18-12 in the first quarter as Tucker Leist hit a 3-pointer and scored 6 points with Teagan Werner, Jace White and T.J. Richards all scoring 4 points.
Ethan Smith and Will Jones scored 6 points each for the Vikings.
Leist hit a trey and scored 9 points while White knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Eagles extended their lead to 36-23 at the half.
Tanner Corn had 6 points for the Vikings.
Each team scored 19 points in the third quarter and the Eagles stayed ahead at 55-42.
Aydan Taylor scored 9 points including a 3-pointer and Smith got 8 points to keep the Vikings’ hopes alive.
White had two more 3-pointers and scored 8 points with Werner adding 5 points for the Eagles in the quarter.
Free throws were the key in the fourth quarter as the Eagles went 13-16 from the foul line. They were 22-of-27 for the game.
Warner — who scored 11 points — was 9-of-10 from the line including 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter with Leist and Richards each 2-of-2 in the quarter.
Taylor drained three more 3-pointers, Corn hit a trey and Jones had 5 points for the Vikings who were forced to foul in an effort to overtake the Eagles.
Taylor drained five 3-pointers and scored 23 points to pace the Vikings (12-9, 5-4). Smith scored 16, Jones netted 13 and Corn added 10.
White had 24 points and Leist 19 to pace the Eagles (13-8, 7-2). Warner had 11 points and Werner got 10.
