MCDERMOTT — Symmes Valley scored two runs in the seventh inning and shut down the Northwest bats in the bottom frame, allowing the Vikings to take home a 7-5 win over the Mohawks on Monday night in a key Southern Ohio Conference game.

The Vikings were able to avenge their loss at home to the Mohawks back on April 2 and stay in the race for the league title. The win brings the Vikings record to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Currently, Oak Hill sits atop the SOC 2 with an undefeated league record. The Mohawks now have a loss in the league and dropped into second place.

The Vikings broke the 5-all tie in the top of the seventh.

During the inning, Andy Strow led off with a single, Tanner Corn reached on a walk, and Braden Hankins followed up with a single into right field to score a run. Corn later scored on a passed ball with two outs to give the Vikings an insurance run.

Corn came out in the bottom of the frame and was able to get the first batter to fly out. Then his defense backed him up by turning a double play to get the final outs to end the game.

Both teams matched each other in the early going, as they each scored a run in the first and four runs in the third. The game remained tied with neither team threatening to score until the final inning.
