Vikings hang on to beat Flyers

WILLOW WOOD — The  Symmes Valley Vikings have made Waterloo Wonder Night a tradition.

And in true Waterloo fashion, the Vikings won on Tuesday as they held off the St. Joseph Flyers 43-41.

Will Jones scored all 6 of his points and Ethan Pinkerman hit a 3-pointer as the Vikings led 11-10 after the first quarter.

Landon Rowe scored 5 points as he and Eli Whaley each drilled 3-pointers.

Symmes Valley opened up a 26-18 halftime lead as Tanner Corn hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points and both Jacob Cade and Ethan Smith had 4 points each in the second quarter.

Wesley Neal scored 4 points with Aiden Deborde and Jake Stevens getting the other 2 St Joseph baskets.

The Flyers mounted a comeback in the third quarter to slice the deficit to 32-30. Neal scored 5 points while Rowe, Evan Balestra and Carter Johnson all had baskets for the Flyers.

Smith and Cade combined for all 7 of Symmes Valley’s points in the quarter.

But Cade hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points and Smith got 4 points in the fourth quarter  as the Vikings held on for the win.

Balestra, Stevens and Neal all drained 3-pointers for the Flyers and Balestra added a pair of foul shots, but the Flyers comeback fell just short.

Cade had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots to lead the Vikings (10-5). Smith scored 12 to go with 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

St. Joseph (5-10) was led by Neal with 12 points.Rowe finished with 8 and Balestra had 7.
